... That's a really big box for a chicken.

[ It's a huge box for a chicken, but he says chicken and she's too busy flicking a glance between the package and his hair to worry about the size of the box. Suspicion gives way to a crooked little smile. ]

[ Smiling through it, though. That's her guy, unable to tolerate the suffering of even a chicken who was probably sent as an insult. ]

anyway he'll be opening it really carefully because he still has no idea if it's some kind of trap or w/e but he finally lifts the lid and peering out from a nest of straw is a jet-black something which is most definitely not a chicken, but prompto's eyes are already widening because he's seen this animal before; they rescued the egg from its nest -- they? him, and ignis and gladio and another boy with dark hair and deep blue eyes. his name escapes prompto for now, but the blond knows full well it's a - ) Chocobo.

( the word sounds so familiar, like he's known it all his life, and with it comes a massive wave of affection he had no idea he could harbour for the tiny bird. ) I know her, she's the last of her species!

[unweaving]

[ Chocobo. The word flutters around the edges of her memory, makes her brows knit and she leans over his shoulder to look. ]

Huh. She's kinda cute.

[ but ]

If she's the last of her kind, what's she doing here? In a box?

Don't know. I mean... with all the ribbons and stuff, maybe she was a present. Who from, though - your guess's as good as mine.

( he crouches a little so he can peer at the little chick over the rim of her box, reaching in to stroke the downy feathers on her back as she cheeps questioningly. ) It's weird, I know her from somewhere -- there were more, too - bigger, but their feathers were different. Yellow, mostly. ( it's fuzzy, but things are coming back little by little. ) They got so big you could put a saddle on and everything, too.

[unweaving]

[ He talks through it, and that little tug of familiarity gets stronger, until - ]

They can swim.

[ Confident. It's true, she just... doesn't know how she knows. He hand settles on his shoulder, gives him a little squeeze. ]

Pick her up.

( as soon as aranea says it something clicks, sparks recollections of floating on a glittering lake with rolling slopes on either side, the roars of a massive long-necked creature echoing across the water's surface from where it basks in the sun on the other side. ) Yeah, that's right. I've ridden 'em before, somewhere...

( at the encouragement prompto reaches in gingerly - ) Hey, buddy. Just gonna pick you up for a bit, okay? ( he's careful not to jostle the chick too much as its small wings flutter from the sudden change in balance, but she seems perfectly content to be carried and cradled in his skinny arms, clawed legs folding back underneath her as she settles down.

prompto probably looks like he's about to explode from happiness tbh THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF HIS LIFE ) She's so soft!!! And warm, too.

He's so happy, and the bird seems pretty content. It's cute as fuck.]

I hope so! ( internally he's just grateful the chick is comfortable enough that she doesn't freak out when he smooshes his face into her feathers a little. prompto still can't remember where exactly he met her previously, but what he does know is he's been absolutely dying for a chance to do this. ) Wonder if she belongs to anyone... Think I should just ask around, to make sure?

( there's a tiny pang of sadness, the thought of saying goodbye to his new friend that stings, but prompto knows too that missing a lost pet is also the worst. )

Found an injured puppy on the street when I was a kid - her owner was so happy when she made it home safe. ( wait, where'd that come from? the streets he remembers look vastly different from any in this town; he never moved, as far as prompto can recall, and he would dismiss it as a vivid dream if the details didn't come back clearer the more he thought about it; that's right, it was a narrow two-storey house in the suburbs of a bustling city with grey and silver buildings that lit up like beacons in the night - but where? prompto makes a mental note of it to wrack his memory again later, instead leaning down the slightest bit to address the chick directly. ) How about you, huh? Is someone missin' you now?

[ He's gazing adoringly at the chocobo

and she's gazing at him, the same sort of look on her face. Of course he'll look for her owner, because he's just that person, but Aranea can't help hoping nobody responds. He looks so happy, and she leans her face close to press a little kiss to his temple, and --

actually, maybe it's cool if someone shows up. The bird kinda smells. ]

Weird for her to show up on the doorstep all gift-wrapped if she's lost. Maybe go ahead and make friends just in case.

[ And she very slowly, very tentatively, lifts a hand to stroke over the chick's back.

Oooh, she is soft. ]

Yeah - wouldn't hurt to try. ( it was only a kiss how did it end up like this, but the flush immediately rises and colours the tips of his ears and nose pink. one day he'll know how he even got so lucky --

just then an idea hits, and the smile on prompto's face is probably brighter than the sun when he makes his next suggestion: ) Say, wanna hold her?

[ What no she doesn't want to hold her

the bird is clearly Prompto's thing

but that look on his face, damn it. She's screwed. ]

[ Great with animals, over here. She awkwardly holds her arms out, ready to get birded. ]

Y'can just make a kind of cradle with your arms like what I'm doing, then hold still. I'll just... get her over there -- ( it takes a few tries, but eventually he gets a flustered baby bird maneuvered into aranea's arms before darting off into another room quickly. ) Back in a sec!

[unweaving]

Three guesses what he's up to.

[ The chocobo sort of nestles in, settling against the cradle of Aranea's arms and her... ample cushioning, and she laughs quietly. ]

Right, you don't know him yet. You'll get used to it.

( it's honestly the most precious thing prompto's ever seen, and he's rescued puppies. ) Say cheese!

[ Close enough. But she's helping! Turning sideways so the little chocobo's face is towards the camera, and turning her own head back to him to look at him over her shoulder. Despite the posing, her smile is genuine. He looks so happy. This bird better have been left for him by someone who was in a position to give it to him, and not as a cruel joke.

If it's the latter, someone's getting lanced. ]

Perfect. ( and he isn't just saying it lightly because that's how it truly is; from the way aranea's stormy silver bangs fall around her lovely face and frame it just right to the contented little bird blinking inquisitively in her arms. prompto gets it in a single snap, because it's completely flawless from the get-go, and he sets the camera down immediately after with a chuckle. ) I'd offer to take her back, but it'd be a shame to interrupt you guys getting to know each other and everything.

[unweaving]

Oh, careful. You don't want a pair of beautiful ladies ganging up on you.

[ He's a red-blooded young man, he should definitely want a pair of beautiful ladies ganging up on him. Just maybe not when one's a bird. And she's about to make a joke to that effect when the chococbo's tail flutters a little against her arms, and there's a sensation of wet warmth.

Aranea's smile constricts into a lemony little twist of her mouth.]
